The Great Commission, given by Jesus, calls every believer to share the Gospel: “Go ye into all the world, and preach the Gospel to every creature” (Mark 16:15). While the message remains unchanging, the Bible demonstrates that there are various ways to communicate it effectively. In this first part of our exploration, we will focus on two specific methods: one-to-one conversations and the distribution of Gospel literature. These approaches highlight the personal and practical aspects of evangelism.
Are There Different Methods or Approaches to Spreading the Gospel?
The question, "Are there different methods or approaches to spreading the Gospel?" is answered affirmatively by Scripture. The Bible shows that believers can utilise a variety of means to reach others with the Good News. In this article, we consider two key methods: personal, one-to-one conversations and the practical distribution of Gospel literature.
One-to-One Conversations
One-to-one conversations are a deeply personal and effective way to share the Gospel. Jesus Himself modelled this approach in His interaction with the Samaritan woman at the well. In John 4, Jesus engaged her in a conversation, starting with a simple request for water. He then guided the discussion to spiritual matters, ultimately revealing Himself as the Messiah: “I that speak unto thee am He” (John 4:26). This personal interaction led not only to her salvation but also to the evangelisation of her entire community.
One-to-one conversations allow for genuine dialogue, addressing individual questions and concerns. The Apostle Philip provides another example when he encountered the Ethiopian eunuch in Acts 8. Philip approached the man, who was reading Isaiah, and asked if he understood what he was reading (see Acts 8:30). This opened the door for Philip to explain the Gospel, leading to the eunuch’s immediate baptism.
In these encounters, humility and reliance on the Holy Spirit are crucial. Peter encourages believers to always be ready to share their faith: “But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear” (1 Peter 3:15). Whether it is a friend, colleague, or stranger, one-to-one conversations provide an opportunity to connect deeply and personally with others.
Handing Out Gospel Literature
The distribution of Gospel literature is another powerful method of spreading the message of salvation. Tracts, booklets, and Bibles can reach individuals in places and at times where personal conversations might not be possible. Paul’s letters to the early churches, which now form much of the New Testament, are an example of how written words can have a lasting impact. As Paul wrote to the Romans: “So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God” (Romans 10:17).
Gospel literature is versatile. It can be handed out in person, left in public spaces, or included with other correspondence. Each piece has the potential to plant a seed of truth in someone’s heart. Isaiah reminds us of the power of God’s Word: “So shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth: it shall not return unto me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it” (Isaiah 55:11).
Handing out literature also provides an opportunity for believers who may feel less confident in verbal evangelism to participate in sharing the Gospel. A simple act of offering a tract can open doors for further discussion or leave a lasting impression on the recipient.
In Summary
Both one-to-one conversations and the distribution of Gospel literature are Biblically supported and effective methods of spreading the Gospel. One approach allows for personal connection and tailored discussions, while the other ensures that the Word of God can reach far and wide, even in the absence of the evangelist. As we consider these methods, let us remember that the ultimate goal is to faithfully proclaim the Good News of Jesus Christ, trusting in the power of the Holy Spirit to work in the hearts of those who hear. As Paul declared, “For I am not ashamed of the Gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth” (Romans 1:16).
In future discussions, we will explore additional methods of evangelism, but for now, may we be encouraged to use these two approaches to fulfil the call to make disciples of all nations.
