Sharing the Gospel with People from Different Cultural Backgrounds or Belief Systems?

Perhaps you don't start sharing the Good News because of the objection "How Can I possibly Share the Gospel with People from Different Cultural Backgrounds or Belief Systems?"

However, the sharing the Gospel is a privilege and a calling for every Christian. It's therefore important for every Christian to understand how to do this with people of all walks of life. When engaging with people from different cultural backgrounds or belief systems, it requires sensitivity, wisdom, and a reliance on the Holy Spirit. A key aspect of this task is recognising that the law of God is written on every person’s heart, as the Bible teaches, and the conscience bears witness to this truth.

Understanding the Universal Knowledge of God

The Apostle Paul reminds us that God has made Himself known to all humanity:

“For when the Gentiles, which have not the law, do by nature the things contained in the law, these, having not the law, are a law unto themselves: which shew the work of the law written in their hearts, their conscience also bearing witness, and their thoughts the mean while accusing or else excusing one another.” (Romans 2:14-15, KJV)

This passage highlights that, regardless of cultural background or belief system, every person has an innate understanding of right and wrong. This moral awareness serves as a bridge for sharing the Gospel, as it points to the existence of a just and holy God.

How Can I Share the Gospel with People from Different Cultural Backgrounds or belief systems? - The Biblical key:

"Wherefore the law was our schoolmaster to bring us unto Christ, that we might be justified by faith." Galations 3:24. So the Bible tells us clearly, the law is the God given reality that leads a person to Christ. Not just that it leads us to Him, but.."The law of the Lord is perfect, converting the soul" Psalm 19:7. It also has it's part in converting the soul.

Engaging the Conscience

The conscience is a God-given faculty that testifies to the moral law written on every heart. When sharing the Gospel, appealing to the conscience can help people recognise their need for a Saviour. Jesus often used questions and parables to gently expose the heart’s condition. For example, He asked:

“Why callest thou me good? there is none good but one, that is, God.” (Mark 10:18, KJV)

By helping individuals reflect on their own moral failings, we can lovingly guide them to the truth that “all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23, KJV) and the hope of redemption through Christ.

Showing Respect and Genuine Love

Respecting cultural differences and showing genuine love are crucial when sharing the Gospel. The Bible instructs us:

“Let your speech be alway with grace, seasoned with salt, that ye may know how ye ought to answer every man.” (Colossians 4:6, KJV)

By listening attentively and approaching conversations with humility, we demonstrate the love of Christ. People are more likely to engage with the message when they feel valued and respected.

Trusting the Work of the Holy Spirit

Ultimately, it is the Holy Spirit who convicts hearts and brings people to faith. Our role is to faithfully share the message, but the results are in God’s hands:

“No man can come to me, except the Father which hath sent me draw him: and I will raise him up at the last day.” (John 6:44, KJV)

We can trust that God is at work in the hearts of those we encounter, using His Word and their conscience to reveal the truth.

In Summary

Sharing the Gospel with people from different cultural backgrounds or belief systems is both a challenge and an opportunity to witness the universality of God’s truth. By recognising that God’s law is written on every heart and the conscience bears witness to this fact, we can connect with others in a meaningful way. As we rely on the Holy Spirit, speak with grace, and show Christ’s love, we fulfil our calling to make disciples of all nations.

A great blessing to the field of outreach

On a personal note. The law itself being written on the heart is a great help to everyone who seeks to minister the Gospel to a heart - wherever they are from or live. I often illustrate that God has, like an artist, left His signature on His creation by way of the conscience / His law. This is how we can know who the One true God is. You can present the laws of God and ask the person if they have ever broken them - offending a Holy God. The humble person will have to admit that they have. This leaves the whole world guilty before God and in desperate need of a Saviour. Do you use the law to lead people to Christ? Share your encounters in the comments below!
