The reality of hell is a sobering and essential aspect of the Gospel message. The Bible speaks plainly and repeatedly about God’s eternal punishment for sin, and understanding this truth deepens our appreciation of the good news of salvation through Jesus Christ. Yet, many today question whether hell should be part of our Gospel message. Is hell important in our Gospel message? The answer is unequivocally yes, as it reveals the seriousness of sin, the justice of God, and the immeasurable grace of salvation through Christ.
Biblically: Why Hell IS important in Our Gospel Message
The Bible’s Descriptions of Hell
The Bible uses a variety of descriptions to convey the terrifying reality of hell. It is called “the lake of fire” (Revelation 20:15), “outer darkness” (Matthew 25:30), and a place where “their worm dieth not, and the fire is not quenched” (Mark 9:44). Isaiah asks, “Who among us shall dwell with the devouring fire? Who among us shall dwell with everlasting burnings?” (Isaiah 33:14). These vivid descriptions remind us that hell is not merely a concept or metaphor but a real place of eternal separation / banishment from God’s presence: "I never knew you;depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness!" Matthew 7:23.
Some argue that hell is not eternal, suggesting that the punishment for sin is temporary or symbolic. However, Jesus Himself affirmed the eternal nature of hell, saying, “And these shall go away into everlasting punishment: but the righteous into life eternal” (Matthew 25:46). If we were to reinterpret “everlasting” or "eternal" in reference to hell, we would have to do the same for heaven. The Bible leaves no room for such inconsistency. Eternal punishment reflects the eternal justice of a holy God.
Why Hell Magnifies the greatness of the Gospel message
The Gospel shines most brightly against the dark reality of eternal hell. Without understanding the eternal punishment we deserve for sin, we cannot fully grasp the greatness of God’s grace in saving us. Sin against an eternal God demands an eternal punishment, and only an eternal mediator—Jesus Christ—could satisfy God’s justice. The Bible declares, “For Christ also hath once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that he might bring us to God” (1 Peter 3:18).
This is a profound mystery: that the eternal Son of God would take on human flesh, endure the wrath of God on the cross, and make a way for sinners to escape eternal punishment. Paul marvels at this, saying, “O the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are his judgments, and his ways past finding out!” (Romans 11:33). Hell underscores the immeasurable love and mercy of God in providing salvation through Jesus Christ.
The Urgency of the Gospel Message
The reality of hell should drive us to our knees in prayer for the lost. Jesus wept over Jerusalem, lamenting their rejection of salvation: “O Jerusalem, Jerusalem...how often would I have gathered thy children together” (Matthew 23:37). Similarly, we should have a deep burden for those who face eternal punishment. The Bible warns, “It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God” (Hebrews 10:31).
Hell’s reality also compels us to preach the Gospel with urgency and clarity. Jude exhorts believers to “save with fear, pulling them out of the fire” (Jude 1:23). This is not a message of condemnation but of hope. God’s mercy is extended to all who repent and believe in Christ: “The Lord is...not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance” (2 Peter 3:9).
In Summary
Is hell important in our Gospel message? Absolutely. It reveals the seriousness of sin, the justice of God, and the glory of His grace in salvation. The Bible gives us more than enough evidence of the reality of hell and eternal suffering. While we may not fully comprehend it, we are left in awe that such a punishment can be removed through Christ’s sacrifice. Let this truth inspire us to worship God for His mercy and to share the Gospel with compassion and urgency, pointing others to the eternal hope found in Jesus Christ. “For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord” (Romans 6:23).
