Know the law regarding Evangelism

Updated: Dec 27, 2023

Today we see a massive increase in the hostility in the UK toward preachers of the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

Some examples:

Please note: There are some great stories of success out there (these are listed at the bottom).

This really should come as no surprise given that our dear Lord Jesus (and His followers) were persecuted. And that the Word promises us that - 2 Timothy 3:12 "all that will live godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution."

Jesus Himself said: "If the world hate you, ye know that it hated me before it hated you. If ye were of the world, the world would love his own: but because ye are not of the world, but I have chosen you out of the world, therefore the world hateth you. Remember the word that I said unto you, The servant is not greater than his lord. If they have persecuted me, they will also persecute you; if they have kept my saying, they will keep yours also. But all these things will they do unto you for my name's sake, because they know not him that sent me." John 15:18-21

However, we also see that we are called to obey the government ordained by God: "Let every soul be subject unto the higher powers. For there is no power but of God: the powers that be are ordained of God. Whosoever therefore resisteth the power, resisteth the ordinance of God: and they that resist shall receive to themselves damnation." Romans 13:1-2

In light of this Romans verse, where should one draw the line? Given that the Apostles and Jesus Himself did not cease from preaching the Gospel when the government came up against them for it, clearly one should continue to preach the Gospel regardless of the hostility toward it.

Indeed one voice amongst persecution (and authorised by God) said this: "For though I preach the gospel, I have nothing to glory of: for necessity is laid upon me; yea, woe is unto me, if I preach not the gospel!" 1 Corinthians 9:16.

Also leaving us with no time to not do it: "Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all long suffering and doctrine." 2 Timothy 4:2.

So with this in mind it is good to be aware of the laws in our land. Below my name, is a download link to help you understand what the law actually is with regards to evangelism.
